Mexican affair - San Julian
Throwback Thursdays.
Last year I celebrated my birthday at San Julian. An authentic Mexican restaurant situated in town is worth a try.
This little restaurant is warm and cosy and owned by Mexicans. The service is very good and they are very accomadating. Some of the waitors are foreigners and do not speak fluent English. The vibe was fun and they brought us some sombreros and stick on moustaches.
So now that we covered the Mexican look we were ready for the margaritas, tequila and authentic Mexican food.
The margaritas were ok not the best. They were not nice and frozen due to the machine being slightly faulty. We went for the set menu which includes a delicious starter platter made up of chilli poppers, sopes (Corn crostini topped with refried bean paste and Mexican chorizo), flautas de papa (crispy corn tortilla rolls filled with mash potato, streaky bacon) and served with a side of guacamole and sour cream.
The main course was a platter consisting of beef Vampiros (toasted corn tortillas as base topped with refried bean paste), braised beef Mexican style, Avo. Veggie quesadillas (grilled soft corn tortilla and filled mozzarella with roasted peppers, sautéed mushrooms, sweet corn, onion and feta.), chicken enchilada (soft tortilla rolls, filled with shredded chicken fried lightly and topped with warm tomato salsa, sour cream and parmesan), pork Tacos (soft corn tortilla as base topped with braised pork shoulder with orange and dill and pickled red onion.)
We ended the meal with a shot of their best reposado Tequila.
If you daring you can order a shot a tequila with the worm in it.
All in all we had an enjoyable evening.
